Good News: A Weekly Update from St Thomas Church – April 25, 2019

Alleluia! Christ is Risen!

The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Even as we celebrate the joy of the Resurrection, we grieve for those slaughtered by terrorists in Sri Lanka as they worshiped in their churches, or celebrated at brunch with friends and families. It is a reminder of how broken our world is, and how close tragedy and loss can be to any one of us at any time.

We are reminded in the burial office in the Book of Common Prayer:“…yet even at the grave we make our song: Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.”

The Resurrection of Christ is the reminder to us that Death does not ultimately win. We mourn for those we love but see no longer, yet in the midst of our tears we know that life for them is changed but not ended. That may not take away the pain of loss, but it can be our comfort in our sorrow.

And so we pray for those whose lives have been taken in Sri Lanka and in too many other places, and for families and friends who mourn, whoever and wherever they may be.

A prayer for those killed in Sri Lanka

Author of Life, we mourn the lives of those killed in the attacks in Sri Lanka this Easter Day. At a time when Christians throughout the world gather to testify to the light of the risen Christ, we find ourselves confronted with the reality of our human brokenness.
Where we have failed to be instruments of your peace, forgive us.

Jesus, in your resurrection, you broke the bonds of death. Pour out your spirit upon us, that we might – in heart, mind, soul, and strength – be instruments of your peace in the face of violence and division. Amen.

Alleluia! Christ is Risen!
The Lord is Risen indeed! Alleluia!

The gardens at St Thomas are looking particularly lovely these days, especially the ones back toward the large fields, Many thanks to Roger Prince, Greg Shutske, Mike Ubry, and others who see to the many tasks that provide such beauty. Come and see!
