Good News: A Weekly Update from St Thomas Church - January 17, 2019

“Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.” John 2:11 They were at a wedding in Cana, in Galilee: Jesus, his mother, his disciples, and, from all accounts, a lot of people were there for the celebration.

Unfortunately, the host ran out of wine, and Jesus’ mother noticed and said something to him. She didn’t tell him what to do; she just made the observation, somehow seeming to know that he would, indeed, do something. The story is familiar: he instructed the servants to fill the huge water jars with water, then to serve from those jars. Instead of water they found wine – the best of anything that had been served.

Our first question might be, “how did he do it?” Second might be “why?” Certainly a lot to ponder, wonder about. But the gospel writer leaves us with the very simple phrase: “...and his disciples believed in him.”

What does it take for us to believe? Miracles? Scientific proof? Trusted, authenticated sources? Or perhaps something quiet and undefinable deep in our gut – our heart – our soul? In this season of Epiphany we are offered glimpses of things often overlooked or seemingly impossible.

May it continue to be a time of wonder and discovery – and perhaps something better than anything we have had before.

Let us pray:

Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshipped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Peace and blessing, Carol+
