Good News: A Weekly Update from St Thomas Church - April 19, 2018

Today, St Thomas Church remembers our benefactor, Louis Stevens, Esq, who died on this date in 1772 at the age of 51 years. He is memorialized by a large stone in the floor of the church, but he is not buried there.

He never saw the American Revolution and the birth of this nation or the Episcopal Church; he died a colonist, and a member of the Church of England, and his last contact with clergy would have been with a missionary priest sent from England.

We remember Louis Stevens largely because he and his family donated the land where the current stone church built in 1768 stands. This generosity made it possible for St ThomasChurch to continue to grow and do God’s work in this corner of the world.

In every generation there are men and women who give of their time, their talent, their treasure –and sometimes their property – in order to do God’s work, to live out God’s mission in theircorner of Creation. We give thanks for them, for their vision and their sacrifice, and their love.

We give thanks for those in our own time who continue this work in this place and beyond, reaching out to our community and the world. And we pray that God’s work will continue herefor generations to come.

Thank you, Louis Stevens, for your vision and your generosity in your own time. Thank you for those in every generation who have continued to share that vision and do the work to spreadGod’s love beyond these walls. May we continue in that same spirit for generations to come.

Let us pray:

Almighty God our heavenly Father, you declare your glory and show forth your handiwork in the heavens and in the earth: Deliver us in our various occupations from the service of self alone, that we may do the work you give us to do in truth and beauty and for the common good; for the sake of him who came among us as one who serves, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Peace and blessing,
