Good News: A Weekly Update from St Thomas Church—February 5, 2015

Screen Shot 2014-01-21 at 2.51.46 PMAs I write, the icy wind is howling around St Thomas Church, Nurture, to Serve, Together in Christ scattering the birds at the bird feeders, and blowing snow across the yard. The sun is brilliant and reflecting off the banks of snow and sheets of ice in the parking lot. Inside, all is warm and the place is filled with light. Anita, our new administrative assistant, is working on the rest of this email, and I am thinking about the readings for this coming Sunday. Isaiah starts us off with these words: “Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? “ read the rest here: Isaiah 40:21-31

In his letter to the people in the church in Corinth, Paul continues with more questions and more explanation on how simple and how complicated it is to be a follower of Jesus. You can read it here: 1 Corinthians 9:16-23

And then the gospel passage from Mark gives us the story of the healing of Peter’s mother-in-law, and the account of all the people who were flocking to Jesus for healing of their own.  Jesus’ response? You can read it here: Mark 1:29-39.

Don’t have a bible handy? Go to, and click on the calendar to find all the readings for Church Year by calendar month. (This is a handy resource for Sunday School Teachers, Readers, Prayers, etc).  Finding what we need when we need it; being able to avail ourselves of resources and help is indeed a great gift. I can remember the freedom I felt when I learned to read, and how worlds have opened for me ever since, not to mention the stimulation of thoughts and ideas, and the call to new prayer, understanding and appreciation of God’s world. Jesus opened worlds for those he touched and taught and healed. May it be so for us this and every day.

Let us pray:

Set us free, O God, from the bondage of our sins, and give us the liberty of that abundant life which you have made known to us in your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Peace and blessing,
