Good News: A Weekly Update from St Thomas Church - June 28, 2018

It is only Thursday, but it has already been quite a week.

On Monday, the Church marked the Nativity of John the Baptist – the outspoken prophet who preached repentance of sins and baptized many, including his cousin, Jesus.

John was the one who spoke of himself as preparing the way of the Lord, and so he did throughout his ministry and martyrdom.

On Tuesday and Wednesday the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) passed down decisions that will change life in this United States in many ways: some good, and some bad, depending on one’s viewpoint.

The days to come will help us to realize more fully theopportunities and challenges of these decisions, and to see more clearly the work that remains to be done to truly live out the words of “liberty and justice for all” as a nation and as a people.

And throughout this week we have heard reports about the ongoing struggle of immigrants trying to enter the United States along our southern border. Families, striving for a better life for themselves and their children, often fleeing horrible, dangerous conditions in their homecountries, and threats to their lives and the lives of their children.

Chances are, many of us don’thave to go too far back in our own family’s history to discover similar stories of displacement and flight, and the importance of finding safe place for themselves, their children, and those they love. The languages and faces may be different, the cultural rituals may be different, but, beneath it all remain “huddled masses, yearning to breathe free...”

“Summertime and the living is easy...” – and so it is in many ways. But we are also reminded by history and world events that life is also challenge, opportunity, and tireless dedication to vision on the part of many individuals and peoples.

As we relax into these summer days, may we also give thanks for those who bear faithful witnessin this and every generation, and continue to pray for justice and peace for all God’s people.

In Christ’s love,
