Good News: A Weekly Update from St Thomas Church—May 21, 2015
Fifty Days after the Resurrection of Jesus, Ten Days after Jesus’ Ascension into heaven at God’s right hand. Known as the Birthday of the Church, it marks the coming of the Holy Spirit on the disciples as tongues of fire – a truly powerful image. No polite little, “Um, excuse me, but I have something for you...” No! Fire! Over their heads! Like the burning bush of Moses time, it did not destroy them, but it sure did get their attention, and the attention of everyone around them. And, as if that were not enough, these disciples began to speak in tongues – in languages that were not their own, but were familiar with the people in the crowds – not just one or two languages, but many, many languages. And each understood the message being proclaimed: the message of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the power and purpose of God’s love for all people.
It is the same message we share today. We may do it with words, but most often we do it in our actions with those we meet every day. God’s Holy Spirit comes upon us, and we are empowered to speak and to act. And that is how we share in changing the world. The color for Pentecost is red for the fire of the Holy Spirit. Perfect day to wear that red shirt.
Let us pray:
O God, who on this day taught the hearts of your faithful people by sending to them the light of your Holy Spirit: Grant us by the same Spirit to have a right judgment in all things, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Peace and blessing,
