Good News: A Weekly Update from St Thomas Church—August 4, 2016
“Jesus said to his disciples, "Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Luke 12:32-34 This is the beginning of the Gospel appointed for this coming Sunday. As I write I am surrounded by the sounds of day four of Vacation Bible School. It is water day, and one of our newly graduated high school students is overseeing a very enthusiastic group of children in the back yard at St Thomas as they seek to soak one another with water balloons, and slide on water slides laid out on the grass. Another group is inside the parish hall finishing up craft projects. There have been bible stories, songs, a new play each day, and great fun for children and adults.
This is our treasure. What we provide for these children is treasure. The memories made here will last a lifetime and beyond. All of this is the living, earthly example of that ‘unfailing treasure in heaven’ found in the gospel.
We are grateful to Fran, Lynn, Greg, Pat and Rob, the adults who have shared their time and talent this week. We are grateful for the support of parents and grandparents who have made it possible for the children to be here each day. We are grateful for the spirit of St Thomas Church that recognizes the treasure we have in this place and in each and every person who comes to share in the love of God found in such abundance here.
Where are you finding your treasure on this summer day? How will you share it today and every day?
Let us pray:
Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Peace and blessing, Carol+
