Good News: A Weekly Update from St Thomas—June 8th, 2017
This is a busy week in the life of the church, from the local to the global. On Saturday we will gather with other people from the Watchung Convocation and with our bishop for the annual Confirmation service. Five young women from St Thomas will be confirmed: Trinity Mikuta, Jordan Oldenberg, Sophia Walker, Mackenzie Kapples and Kerry Walsh. They have been working with Doug Logg over the past several months, meeting regularly for prayer, discussion, bible study, and spiritual formation. This confirmation will not be an ending, but a beginning; one more step on their journey as followers of Jesus.
It is a journey which began with their birth and baptism, and will continue throughout their entire lives, just as it is for everyone who follows Jesus. We celebrate with them, give thanks for their accomplishment, and pray for the continued expansion and deepening of their life in Christ.
This Sunday is the first Sunday after Pentecost, also called Trinity Sunday. We hear in the gospel these words:
“The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:16-20
This has been called “The Great Commission:” Jesus sends his disciples – and us – out into the world to proclaim the gospel, and to “make disciples of all nations...” We do this in a variety of ways, unique to our own lives and situations. It is not a suggestion, but a mandate, and one that we accept out of our love for God, and our desire to obey God’s commandments. This is not always easy, but Jesus has promised that he will be with us always.
So we continue on The Way, always with God’s help.
Let us pray: Almighty and everlasting God, you have given to us your servants grace, by the confession of a true faith, to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of your divine Majesty to worship the Unity: Keep us steadfast in this faith and worship, and bring us at last to see you in your one and eternal glory, O Father; who with the Son and the Holy Spirit live and reign, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
This weekend we will celebrate with an outdoor service and picnic, beginning at 10:00. If it does happen to rain, we will move the celebration indoors. See below for more information. The following Sunday, June 18, we will go on our summer worship schedule: one service at 9:00 am, with hymns. All are always welcome!
Peace and blessing, Carol+
